Abstract

This book is devoted to research on the computer structuring of canonical texts on the example of the classical ancient Chinese treatise "Dao De Jing". The idea of such structuring was proposed in 1976 by the Russian sinologist V. S. Spirin and further supported and developed by A. M. Karapetyants and other researchers. It is based on the concept of "universal parallelism", which mathematically can be understood as an equivalence relation on a set of elementary text units (hieroglyphs, words). Karapetyants performed a complete structuring of the "Dao De Jing", which was analyzed using a computer basing on various criteria of similarity of character sequences as fragments of text. The text of the paragraph of "Dao De Jing" is placed in the cells of the matrix 33. There may be several such acceptable placements and it was necessary to compare these placements according to the degree of parallelism of the text by selecting the "most parallel" placements. At the same time, the developed methodology and computer programs can be applied not only to the structuring by Karapetyants and not only to the text of the "Dao De Jing". Finally, in the broadest sense, some methods, algorithms and programs can be used to solve problems that are very far from textual research.
